The State Audit Institution (SAI) received on Sunday, the international experts visiting the UAE to review the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). H.E. President of State Audit Institution, Dr. Harib Al Amimi, has announced during the opening session of the experts’ meeting that the UAE has signed on the UNCAC as it is keen to fight corruption and believes in the international cooperation aiming to provide efficient solutions against corruption. Anti-corruption principle is one of the most important priorities for the political and governmental authorities in the UAE, in particular, the audit and control authorities. “There are currently many authorities fight corruption in the UAE in addition to various legislations that criminalize the corruption; however, we are enthusiastic and exerting more efforts to enhance and integrate those legislations. For this purpose, the competent authorities are currently studying and revising draft legislations for fighting corruption taking into consideration the UNCAC and other countries’ experiences in this regard” H.E. added. Moreover, H.E. The President, mentioned that the UAE will go under a comprehensive assessment process for its compliance with UNCAC provisions. The review experts team, carrying out this activity, consists of international experts from the Secretariat of the state parties of the convention and members from both reviewing countries (Portugal and Maldives) assigned to review the UAE implementation of the UNCAC. The UAE experts team, formed under a resolution by H.E. President of the State Audit Institution, will work together with the UN team. The UAE experts team includes representatives of the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Central Bank, Dubai Police General Headquarters, Public Funds Prosecutions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and the State Audit Institution responsible for following up the UNCAC in the UAE. It is worth mentioning that H.E. President of the SAI has issued the above-mentioned resolution comprising these authorities to follow up and coordinate with the other parties in the UAE for the implementation of the Convention. In this regard, the UAE experts team has conducted many meetings, discussed the different aspects of the convention and prepared suitable responses on the reviewing state parties’ inquiries. These responses are supported by evidences from the legislations and laws applicable in the UAE concerning the anti-corruption procedures. In addition to that, the UAE experts have participated and attended many international meetings conducted in the UNCAC’s Secretariat Headquarters in Vienna over the past period. During those meetings, the state parties have discussed the mechanisms and actions relating to the implementation of the convention provisions and aiming at improving the state parties’ capabilities to achieve the objectives and targets set out in the UNCAC.
